Stagecraft Week 8:  What's BACK there? 

(Stage Managers, Props Masters, Crew)

October 19-23, 2020

Important terms are in RED.

Google Classroom assignments are in BLUE.

If ABSENT, you are REQUIRED to read / understand / do all activities posted for that day, even if it's not an "assignment".  

DAY 1:

1.)  Reviewed what was learned last week in the On-Stage lighting tutorials.  Also reviewed things we've already learned about lighting (parts of a fixture, gels, gobos, jobs of a lighting designer, etc.)

2.) Chose an area (from the IB Learner Profile) to individually focus on this week.  (If Absent, be sure to complete this under Week 8 in your REFLECTION JOURNAL in Google Classroom

3.)  Watched a video (WICKED Lighting: Lighting Plotand responded in REFLECTION JOURNAL (Journal Title:  Wicked Lighting) about 2-3 things you found interesting or new from the video.

4.) Analyzed photos from various stage productions for color/lighting used in each to create specific moods.

5.) Discussed the relationship between lighting designers and special effects designers; watched two Special Effects videos and discussed problem-solving in both.

6.)  Started new unit:  WHAT'S BACK THERE? 

  • If you went backstage during a production, what might you see?  What types of people would you see doing what types of jobs? 

    • running/deck crew helping to "power" all the scene changes and "magic" that happens during a show;

    • props hand-offs and preparation;

    • the "coordination" of entire crews following a stage manager's cues

7.) Watched a video (Working Backstage at Aladdin The Musicaland responded in REFLECTION JOURNAL (Journal Title:  Technical Director & Load-in) about at least 3 things you learned about technical directors and load-in.

8.)  Learned about  and discussed the role of a Stage Manager.  Watched a video (Working in Theatre: Stage Manager).  

9.) Watched a teaching video that discussed additional roles of a Stage Manager & also introduced types of Props.  

10.) Participated in an activity in which students learned how to spike furniture on a set, and also learned how complete a successful scene shift.  

11.) Observed a Props List (also shown in teaching video above) and discussed key information needed on props lists.

12.) Received a scene from a play (The Uninvited) to read and "mine" for props needed.  Directions were given for how to complete NEXT class when a sub is present.  (See Day 2 for instructions.)

DAY 2:

1.)  Participated, in pairs, in reading a scene from a play and highlighting all the props found in the scene.  

  1. Read your scene

  2. Highlight any prop you find.  Include hand props, costume props (NOT costumes), and set dressing.

  3. After reading the scene and highlighting props, complete (with your partners) your Props List (Spreadsheet) in Google Classroom.

  4. Submit scene when finished (if you DON'T finish, please finish for homework).  This WILL be graded.  If you were ABSENT, see Ms. Price next class.)

2.) Participated in a Summative Skills activity (Skill Relay) in teams on stage.

  • Person 1:  bring in pipe (with proper safety calls)

  • Person 2:  Hang lighting unit and tighten down (safely)

  • Person 3:  Hook up fixture to dimmer and turn on

  • Person 4:  Drop gel / Drop gobo

  • Person 1:  Bring out pipe and focus

  • Person 5 (or team choice):  Properly wrap a cable

  • (after each round, students rotated to next position so that each person performed every task)

HOMEWORK:

If you haven't finished your props list for your scene, do so for homework.
