Acting:  Week 8
(March 13-17, 2023)

Important topics/terms are in RED.

If ABSENT, you are REQUIRED to read / understand / do all activities posted for that day, even if it's not an "assignment".  

DAY 1:  Story (Anecdote / Bait)

 

*Discussed the requirements for attending the musical and writing a Review/Critique of the production and also went over Review (Summative) assignment with Ms. Price.  For more/specific information on this Assignment and how to complete it, click HERE.

 

1.) Discussed our next unit:  STORY

2.) Journaled (in Google Classroom PROCESS JOURNAL under week 7)  If absent be sure to do on your own.

Journal Title:  "Great" Stories

  • (In your opinion) What does a great story "look" like?

  • (In your opinion) What moves a story forward?

3.) Watched a video by Ira Glass (0:00-3:04) in which he discusses anecdotes & bait in storytelling.  If absent be sure to do on your own.

  • Note:  Ira Glass is a radio host of a storytelling program ("This American Life").  Although in this video he discusses stories told on his radio show/podcast, most of the principles he discusses apply to stories told on stage, as well.

4.) Watched a short film by film-maker Caleb Slain (Lost & Found Shop). Pay attention to the "anecdote" and "bait" offered in the story by the filmmaker.  Discussed.

 

5.)  Listened to 3 different clips played by Ms. Price and responded in Google Classroom PROCESS JOURNAL:  "Feels Like" and "Looks Like" for each clip. 

NoteThis activity will be used to create our 4th (and final) scene for our IB Summative:  Thinking Creatively.

3.) Received instructions for our final acting scene (for IB Summative "Thinking Creatively")

  • With a partner (of your choice), create a GOODBYE SCENE to music (choose clip #1, #2, or #3)

    • Be SPECIFIC in your CHOICES (character, setting, why's, etc.)

    • Your STORY should have a beginning, conflict, sequence of actions, and resolution (NOT the same action over and over).  

    • No talking (or mouthing words).  Work to SHOW more than you tell.  

4.) Collaborated with various partners to share ideas for concepts for a strong story for a Goodbye Scene to the music clips shared in class. (You will rehearse your scene with a partner next class.)

DAY 2:  Story (Strong Concepts)

1.)  Reviewed "anecdote" and "bait" in storytelling.

2.) Watched a video by Ira Glass (0:00-2:05) in which he discusses  the need (in creative work) to let "bad" ideas go.

3.) Reviewed 3 different music clips played by Ms. Price and reviewed responses from last class in Google Classroom PROCESS JOURNAL:  "Feels Like" and "Looks Like" for each clip. 

4.) Reviewed instructions for our final acting scene (for IB Summative "Thinking Creatively")

  • With a partner (of your choice), create a GOODBYE SCENE to music (choose music clip #1, #2, or #3)

    • Be SPECIFIC in your CHOICES (character, setting, why's, etc.)

5.) Collaborated with partner to develop a concept, artistic intention, and strong story for a "Goodbye Scene" to music. 

 

6.) Rehearsed concepts/scenes for performance with your partner.

DAY 3:  Story (Creating / Rehearsing Concepts)

1.)  Reviewed "anecdote" and "baitin storytelling.

2.)  Watched Ira Glass on Storytelling - part III (0:00-1:54) and discussed how creative thinking CAN be developed by constantly creating (a large volume of work) and how failure is a part of the creative PROCESS..  (Watch HERE)  (if absent, be sure to watch)

3.)  Discussed:

  • What have you been taught about "failure" in your life?  (through adults' actions, not words)

  • How can learning to think creatively (and producing creative work) help you in YOUR chosen career/life path? 

4.) Discussed how creativity CAN be developed (re-visited) by doing, doing, doing and that "failure" is a necessary part of the creative process.

5.) Analyzed the story structure of two Goodbye Scene performances by former Acting students. (Watched videos of two former scenes.)

6.) Rehearsed goodbye scenes with a partner.

7.) Completed questions #1-3 on REFLECTION #4 (in Google Classroom)

8.) Performed Goodbye scenes with a partner and received audience feedback.  (If you did not perform today, you will perform NEXT class.  We will wrap up this project and you will receive your IB SUMMATIVE grade for "Thinking Creatively".)

DAY 4:  Performing Story Concepts

1.) Reviewed:  Is there a FORM to strong storytelling?  (Anecdote, Bait, etc.) 

2.) Reviewed IB (Thinking Creatively) Rubric for your final performance.  (Remember, you will receive a Summative grade for "Thinking Creatively" based on your FOUR scenes - based on growth over the course of those 4 scenes.

3.) Completed questions #1-3 on REFLECTION #4 (in Google Classroom) if you haven't already.

4.) Rehearsed Goodbye scenes with a partner (if you haven't already performed)

5.) Completed (if you haven't already) questions #1-3 on Reflection #4 (in Google Classroom Assignment:  REFLECTION #4)

6.) Performed Goodbye scenes with a partner and received audience feedback.

7.) Reminder:  Complete the last 2 questions (post-performance) on Reflection #4 (in Google Classroom Assignment:  REFLECTION #4)
