Stagecraft:  Week 11 
(April 10-14, 2023)
(Testing Week - no class Tuesday; 5th on Thurs, not Fri)

If ABSENT, you are REQUIRED to read / understand / do all activities posted for that day, even if it's not an "assignment".  

DAY 1:  Lighting Basics with John 

1.) Learned the names of various light fixtures used in theatre with John.  If absent, watch this video (and take notes in in Google Classroom (CLASS NOTES - Stage Lighting Fixtures).

2.) Learned about gels, gobos, and other supplemental lighting information (with John).

DAY 2:  Lighting & Fly Lines / Tutorials

1.)   Ms. Price introduced our next unit in Stagecraft:  WHAT'S UP THERE?  (If you were to look UP while in the audience or on stage, what would you SEE?)

2.) Reviewed:  Students reviewed various stage terms learned in Unit 1:

  • Above the stage:

    • grid

    • fly loft

    • batten/pipes

    • electrics / light fixtures

    • backdrops

    • border & legs

    • fly lines 

    • cyclorama

    • scrim

  • Above the audience​:

    • cat walks​

    • light fixtures, etc.

 

3.) Watched a short video about fly systems.  (If absent, be sure to watch)

4.) Learned about the 3 jobs of a lighting designer:  (If absent, be sure to learn)

1.) Light the actor - accomplished with front light for seeing actor's face & other directions for sculpting actor, etc. 

2.) Establish/support setting (show location, time of day, season etc. with lighting) - often accomplished cyc lights, gobos, scenery light, etc.

3.) Create mood - accomplished with color, direction of light, etc.

5.) Watched a video (Billy Elliot Lighting) and reflected on 2 things that you found interesting, intriguing or new  (If absent, be sure to do this on your own.)

6.) Reviewed the names of lighting fixtures

  • Scoop

  • Fresnel

  • Par Can

  • Ellipsoidal 

  • Cyc Light

  • Spot Light

7.) Learned about the parts of a light fixture

  • "C clamp"

  • Yoke

  • Safety cable

  • Shutter handle

  • Power cable

  • Gel frame holder 

 

8.)  Students went to the theatre and did a Fly Line Tutorial (and skill demonstration) with Logan as well as Cyc Light Tutorial (and skill demonstration) with John.*

If you were absent for today's fly line tutorial, watch THIS up to 8:25 (about how the fly line system works and how to safely use it)

DAY 3:  Lighting & Fly Lines /  Tutorials

1.)  Reviewed the 3 jobs of a lighting designer and how each is often accomplished through lighting...

1.) Light the actor 

2.) Establish/support setting 

3.) Create mood 

2.) Watched a video about the process to:  hang, "rough focus" and program a light fixture. (If absent, watch HERE)

3.) Reviewed the names and the parts of a light fixtures.  (see Day 2)

4.) Learned about Conventional lights

  • high power/halogen bulbs

  • require gels (handled gel books & looked at the various colors of gels, etc.)

  • can take gobos (observed images of different "looks" created from various gobos)

5.) Learned about "Practicals"

  • any onstage light source that acts as a practical part of the physical environment

  • examples:  lamps, chandeliers, wall scones, etc.

6.) Learned about LED lights (can make ANY color without gels)

7.) Watched a video (Lighting the Lights in Billy Elliott) and discussed new terms. (master electrician, "wash" deck electrician, smoke/foggers, data cables, main console & backup, dimmer) If absent watch on your own.

8.) Students went to the theatre and did a Fly Line Tutorial (and skill demonstration) with Logan as well as Cyc Light Tutorial (and skill demonstration) with John.*
