Stagecraft:  Week 4

(September 21-25, 2020)

Important terms are in RED.

Google Classroom assignments are in BLUE.

If ABSENT, you are REQUIRED to read / understand / do all activities posted for that day, even if it's not an "assignment".  

DAY 1:

1.)  Read/Skim (with a partner):  "The Performance Space" (material) in Google Classroom.  Every time you see a bold term, list it in one of two columns on your "Stage Terms" Assignment in Google Classroom:  "Already Learned" or "Haven't Learned Yet".  (For all NEW terms, be sure to write the term's definition in the far right column.)

2.) Looked at images/examples (shown by Ms. Price) of the following new terms:  props table, cyc, scrim, platforms, wagons.  If absent, click the video HERE to learn about these terms. (required)

3.) Learned/Practiced stage directions.  If absent, click HERE (video) or HERE (reading) to learn more about stage directions.  (required)

4.) Watched a video about Theatre Lighting Fixtures (and took notes in Google Classroom).

5.) Finished learning (in 3 different groups) about the following areas/skills:

  • Station #1 with Ms. Price:  Fly lines

  • Station #2 with John:  Chop/Mitre Saw

  • Station #3 with G: High & Low Tour (catwalks & pit)

DAY 2:

1.)  Reviewed:  types of stages, props table, cyclorama, scrim, platforms, wagons, names of theatre lighting fixtures

2.)  Finished watching a video about Theatre Lighting Fixtures (and took notes in Google Classroom).

3.)  Learned about the types of materials used to make the building blocks of sets:  flats & platforms.  Also learned about the different types of flats.  If absent, watch a video about these materials/items HERE. (required)

  • 2x4's & 1x4's

  • luan, plywood (also learned about OSB, masonite, and particle board)

  • "stock"

  • Broadway vs. Hollywood flats

  • stiles and rails

  • joists

  • carriage bolts 

  • "legs" / casters

4.) Ms. Price assigned the "building teams" for next week, which will each be building a flat (women) or platform (men).

5.) Learned what a cut list is, and why builders use them.  Each building group received their own cut list to prepare for building their flat/platform.

6.) Learned about where everything "lives" in the scene shop (tools, supplies, types of wood, etc.), by completing a Scene Shop Scavenger Hunt in pairs.

7.) Completed a cut list in building groups for the flat/platform project that will begin NEXT class.
