Stagecraft:  Week 4
(September 9-13, 2024)

Important terms are in RED.

Google Classroom assignments are in BLUE.

If ABSENT, you are REQUIRED to read / understand / do all activities posted for that day, even if it's not an "assignment"/homework. 

Day 1:   Flats & Platforms

 

1.) Announcements:  

  • There will be a SUMMATIVE QUIZ FRIDAY ON Wednesday September 18 on Stages, Stage Terms, & Materials used to Build Flats/Platforms

  • Everyone:  Bring paint clothes!

  • In order to study/prepare for your quiz, re-watch, or study your Google Classroom CLASS NOTES from:

2.)  Reviewed tools, types of wood, and terms/concepts already learned in class (incl. never terms: scrim, cyc

3.) Learned about flats & platforms.

  • Flat = a wall

  • Platform = a load-bearing unit (that you can leg or caster for set pieces or actors on stage)

4.) Took notes in Google Classroom CLASS NOTES about 2 different types of flats (if absent, be sure to add the information below your notes page entitled "Flats (types) & Platforms"

  1. Broadway Flats (covered in muslin)

  2. Hollywood Flats (covered in luan)

  3. Plywood

  4. 2x4's

  5. Joists

5.) Learned about stock (keeping standard flats & platforms for use in the next show).

6.) Learned about stationary sets (box or unit sets) that stay the same throughout an entire show, and sets that are on wheels (casters) and move throughout a show.  A platform with wheels is known as a wagon.

7.) Discussed how everything that we've learned so far in class is preparing us for the knowledge and skills needed for students' first build project:  Building a flat or platform.

8.) Watched a video on the basics of building a Flat.  (if absent, be sure to watch HERE).  The basics of building a platform are in your Google Classroom CLASS NOTES ("How to build a platform").

9.) Learned about a cut list (measure TWICE, cut ONCE).  Students were given a cut list to determine the type & size of materials needed to build their flat or platform.  (If absent, you need to know how to do your OWN cut list, so be sure you've learned the information above so you are ready to figure out your cut list when you return.)

Day 2:   Building Flats & Platforms

1.) Reviewed terms/concepts already learned in Stagecraft.

2.) Completed individual cut lists.

3.) Students were put in groups to begin gathering materials and start the process of building a flat or platform.

Day 3:   Building Flats & Platforms

1.) Reviewed terms/concepts already learned in Stagecraft.

2.) Went to the scene shop and continued building a flat or platform with a group.

DAY 4: Finish Building / Review

1.) Reviewed terms & concepts learned in class.

 

2.)  Learned next steps in building:

  • Flat groups will prime their flat

  • Platform group will either leg or caster their platforms

3.) Groups signed the back of their flats/platforms

4.) When finished with flat/platform, students were instructed in a paint tutorial.
