Day 1: Costume Design & Management

Ms. Price introduced Costumes / Make-up / Wig portion of the unit.

(In this "unit" we will do mini-lessons each day, and go to the scene shop to work on the play/musical the rest of the class)

Watched a video: The Phantom of The Opera Costume Design and completed Handout

Ms. Price showed images of backstage costume organization and asked students to identify how/why the costumes were organized (the way they were).

Watched a video: Costume Shop Manager

Discussed costumes from the perspective of "managing" them (organizing, cleaning, fixing, etc.)

Day 2: Costumes / Quick Change

Watched & discussed video: The Journey of the Dress (Phantom of the Opera)

Discussed the "art" of the Quick Change (as shown in the above video)

Analyzed two Quick Change videos and discussed what both the actor and the dressers did to make it efficient and smooth:

Discussed WHERE the quick changes often take place. Discussed what you must PREPARE to effectively run a quick change.

Day 3: Costumes / Quick Change

Watched & discussed video: Lion King - Discover the Costumes (What OTHER things are considered in the design/maintenance of costumes BEYOND clothing?)

In-Class Assignment: Students participated in a Quick Change activity as groups. (Students competed against eachother in fast/efficient quick changes, following the steps in the handout above.)

Day 4: Make-up Design

Students read /analyzed make-up Face charts (emphasis on reading/analyzing BASIC, OLD, YOUNG)

Watched a short tutorial (Make-up for the Stage: Old Age) on how to apply make-up in order to age someone.

Day 6: 1/2 Class: Stage Make-up (1/2 Class: In Scene Shop)
