A brief synopsis of the play, Steel Magnolias:

Shelby, a spirited woman in her 20's who as recently married, has decided to have a baby...against both her mother's wishes and doctor's advice.  (She has diabetes, and it has been determined that having a child could be life-threatening for her.)

In this scene:

Shelby has come back to her home town for its annual Christmas festival.  She's excited, yet worried, to share the "good" news with her mother (M'Lynn) that she's pregnant.

  1.  Determine your scene's stage business options (and TRY 3 today).  Completed page 9 in your scene booklet.

  • obligatory blocking (blocking you HAVE to do in your scene - entrances/exits, etc.)

  • blocking patterns (blocking choices that show the build of your scene through movement; determine the climax of your scene before working on developing the blocking build of your scene)

  • detailed blocking / stage business (the actions of characters in the scene that show the subtext of the scene)

3.) Watched a video that showed how professional actors work with scripts / verbs / blocking choices.  If absent, watch HERE.

4.) Reviewed how to work on detailed blocking/stage business with the use of character verbs:

  • Think:  What does MY character want to do TO the other character with THESE words (the line)?

  • Describe that want with an ACTABLE VERB (to impress, to belittle, to avoid, to press, to comfort, etc.)

    • To [actable verb] him/her

    • Tips:

      • Avoid verbs that stay in the character's HEAD - those are NOT actable (to wonder, to hope, to understand, etc.)

      • Avoid verbs that stay in the character's  WORDS - those are NOT actable (to question, to tell, to inform, etc.).  Instead explore the subtext:  Why is my character questioning?

      • Avoid emotion words - those are NOT focused on the RELATIONSHIP in the scene (feels confused, feels happy, etc.)

      • Avoid passive verbs - those are NOT focused on the RELATIONSHIP (to "be happy", etc.)
